Wind
DC Energy has been installing medium sized wind turbines since 2004. We have 18 installations in Vermont and nearby New York state. We install wind turbines from 1KW to 100KW in size. The smaller could be enough for a combination system which also includes solar electric panels. The larger would be a community scale project that could power 10 or more houses. Any of these wind turbines can be a very worthwhile investment.
The wind provides us with a free source of energy that does not emit carbon dioxide or cause any other form of pollution. When we start talking to customers about a wind turbine, we start with the most important step. That is determining the average annual wind speed for your site. We have several desk top resources that can help us get a picture of the average wind speed at your property, from our office. With this bit of information, we can estimate how much power you would get from a wind turbine at your property. If our research tells us that your property does not have a high enough average wind speed to make it worthwhile to install a wind turbine, we typically suggest that you consider a solar electric system instead.
There is always the option of installing a wind anemometer (wind speed measuring device) and taking wind speed measurements for one year or more. The resulting data might prove our desktop information wrong. However, the installation of a wind anemometer is an investment that typically only makes sense for wind turbines in the 50KW or larger scale.
